UNLOCK THE POWER OF GAMING

A Different Approach

  • Video game therapy is a modern, flexible approach to mental health support, particularly suited to neurodivergent children, teens, and young adults. It is delivered by a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, or play therapist with experience in both mental health and therapeutic gaming.

  • This approach is ideal for individuals who may find traditional talking therapies overwhelming, unrelatable, or simply ineffective. Many clients are autistic, ADHD, or have experienced trauma — and benefit from a method that feels familiar, engaging, and low-pressure.y bridges the gap between play and psychological healing.

How it works

  • Sessions are delivered either in-person or online using a blend of video conferencing (usually Zoom or Discord) and secure multiplayer games. The therapist joins the game alongside the client, offering connection, reflection, and co-regulation in real time — whether that's exploring a Minecraft world, planting crops together in a farming sim, or navigating tricky game challenges in Fortnite.

  • Therapy can be directive or client-led, depending on what’s needed. Some sessions involve structured therapeutic goals; others focus on building trust, reducing anxiety, or supporting emotional regulation through shared play. Before starting, the therapist meets with the parent or young person (depending on age) to agree on goals, assess preferences, and make sure the platform and game are a good fit.

Platforms

Video game therapy sessions can be accessed using:

  • iPad, Nintendo Switch, PC or Mac, Xbox or Playstation (game-dependent)

Sessions are hosted on platforms such as:

Zoom, Teams, Discord, etc – whichever platform the client is comfortable using (for video interaction and screen sharing - although some clients may prefer to turn-off their cameras).

Support can be provided to help families get set up with the necessary software and parental controls, making the process as smooth and accessible as possible.
